TAO facilitated a student-run project at the ahu site of Vinapu from April to June, 2005. The main objectives were to:
  • map the wall at scale
  • photograph the wall at scale
  • measure and record the distribution of lichens upon an arbitrary square meter of the wall's surface.

The project concludes that monitoring lichens on Rapa Nui holds potential for research in both lichenology and archaeology. This website has been created in the hopes of stimulating further investigations and to disseminate the data and information this initial project produced.

Most importantly, the enthusiasm of the students involved (despite the project taking place during their school vacation) highlights the great aptitude and potential of the young Rapa Nui community for future scientific research.
